Each weekday for the past 26 years, Bob Barker has been signing off episodes of The Price Is Right with the same phrase:
“Help control the pet population; have your pet spayed or neutered.”
And he has never once forgotten to say it. And it’s a good thing that he’s spreading the word, because yesterday? I forgot to tell you what day it was. It was Spay Day USA y’all!
Did I hear someone ask—Lulu, what is Spay Day USA? Uh hum, I believe that I did. So I will inform. Spay Day USA is the Humane Society of the United States of America’s (HSUS) annual campaign to inspire people to save animal lives by spaying or neutering pets and feral cats. The HSUS states that it’s an event that’s been taking place since 1995 and is America’s first and only national day of action to promote the spaying or neutering of pets.
There are many ways that you can participate in Spay Day USA—you can organize an event, fundraise, sponsor an animal in need, or simply have your pet spayed or neutered. And even though the “official” 2007 Spay Day USA has passed, many communities and animal clinics across the U. S. recognize this entire week as a time to raise awareness and to offer low-cost or even free spaying and neutering. Click here to find a clinic in your area that’s offering these services.
As for my participation in Spay Day USA, I decided to become a member of my local Humane Society chapter. And as soon as I attend an orientation program, I plan to do some volunteer work for them. There are a couple of volunteering programs that I’m interested in, which include helping with pet adoption days and participating in the Pat-A-Pet program. The Pat-A-Pet program involves taking your pet to local nursing homes and hospitals to visit with the residents and patients. My little terrier, Abby, loves people and she will be wonderful at spreading love and good cheer!
Oh—and on this same note, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is giving away 500 ASPCA Day kits in celebration of their upcoming ASPCA Day. Just click the link here, and enter for your chance to win (through March 2…so hurry!). The kit contains a T-shirt, pet tag, wrist bands, and other fun items. It’s free stuff for a good cause, people! And be sure to wear the color orange on April 10 in support of ASPCA Day and to help celebrate their 141st birthday!
And now, I leave you with some pictures of my spayed and neutered menagerie.
Jackson Browne…
Sir William Ray…
And little Abigail…

Lulu…
It is a good thing promoting Spay Day USA. Although, Jackson, Sir William and Ms. Abby have a look on ponderous worried look on their face.
My question is how on God’s Green Earth did you get GR to wear a T shirt saying “Neutering is a good thing”. It does promote Spay Day…I guess.
Your guys are so beautiful! I did not know the cat wore a tuxedo. He looks like a matre d’ at a fine restaurant.
