For the Love of Saturday. And Emptiness?

Photo Hunters

Finally!  It’s Saturday.  And we all know what occurs on Saturday, right?  Photo Hunters, that’s what!  And today’s theme?  Is Empty

Okay, the theme is a bit odd, and it took a lot of digging around my photos to find something that even remotely relates to Empty.  Now, I know that I should probably be thinking outside the box on this one, but it’s just a little too late on Friday night for me to even be using my brain to form a sentence, let alone come up with some brilliant idea.  I’ve just returned home from eating two baskets of chips and salsa and a taco salad from the local taco hut, and the last thing that’s on my mind is feeling empty.

However, I will make a feabled attempt.  And here are my photos…

Painted coffins

These beautifully painted (and empty!) Egyptian coffins are on display at the British Museum in London.  I have visited the museum twice, and have found that the rooms that house the Egyptian antiquities are the most fascinating.  Just being in the presence of a small piece of ancient Egypt is a bit overwhelming, to say the least.

If you look closely at the photo, you will see the inside of a coffin in the background.  The coffins were painted and decorated just as beautifully on the inside as they were on the outside.  Gosh, if my plans weren’t to be cremated, I would so want to be buried in one of these!  Kind of a sick and unrealistic thought, I guess.  So, I will move on…

The following is a photograph that I snapped of a painted coffin of a young woman, along with a description of the display…

Painted coffin of young woman

The front of the coffin represents the dead girl dressed in classical costume.  Her long creme-coloured tunic has black stripes, or clavi, and a woven black H-motif on the right sleeve.  A pink mantle with green edging is worn over the tunic.  The feet are represented wearing black thong sandals.  A wreath is painted over the hair, and earrings, now lost, were originally inserted into the holes in the ears.  Snake bracelets are painted on both wrists, and in the left hand are two sprigs, perhaps of myrtle.  In front of the feet is an inverted scene in Egyptian style, showing the winged solar disk, from which emerge human arms holding tally-sticks, and the hieroglyphic sign ankh, signifying ‘life.’  The group is probably to be interpreted as a promise of eternal life through the power of the sun-god.  The sides of the coffin are decorated with figures of Egyptian deities arranged in registers.

That about wraps it up (tee-hee…wraps, as in mummies? sorry, could not resist), so have a great weekend, y’all!  WAIT!  One last thing.  If you would like to view other bloggers photos, click here for a blogroll of participants.  Now, go have that great weekend!

It’s a good thing these coffins are empty. :)
Seriously, they’re interesting. Intricate, elaborately done.

I love the British Museum! They also have the Rosetta Stone, right? While I was there, a class of Japanese kindergardeners came in and I could tell the teacher was explaining that the students can not touch anything.

I was feeling a bit cheeky (this was during my study abroad during university) so I reached out and touched it. A split second later, all of the kids had reached out and touched it as well. The teacher was clearly upset and the kids were clearly overjoyed.

I walked away chucking as I could hear her yell at them in Japanese. I thought it was pretty funny at the time. Who would have thought I would become a teacher someday? I would probably have slapped me, had I been that Japanese teacher ;)

Beautiful! :) Nice choices for the theme. They remind me of some of the sarcophagi in the Egyptian Museum here in Munich. My mom is fascinated with ancient Egypt, so she enjoyed looking at your photos!

I would have to check twice to make sure they were empty. These are so gorgeous. I’ve seen the ones in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They have quite an extensive Egyptian collection. Thanks for the visit.
