Fire damages apartment porch

WINDER – A fire at a vacant apartment Tuesday is believed to have been started by a person smoking on a sofa on the front porch, according to Fire Chief Ray Mattison.

The Capital Avenue apartment is a unit of the Winder Housing Authority. It’s tenants had been evicted July 27, according to police reports.

The 2:32 a.m. fire started on a sofa that sat on the front porch. No one was injured in the blaze which damaged the porch.
