Thursday Thirteen: Confessions of a Cereal Lover

One thing that I remember about my childhood is enjoying a huge bowl of sugary-sweet puffed cereal for breakfast each morning.  Obviously, my mother was not a health nut.  In fact, my friends loved to come to my house if only to gawk at our kitchen cupboard full of every kind of cereal imaginable.  What we lacked in the area of health, we definitely made up for in variety.  In fact, our cupboard looked something like this:

 Wall of cereal

Well, maybe not exactly like that, but pretty darn close.

To this day, I still love the occasional bowl of sugared goodness.  In fact, I would consider cereal one of my most favorite comfort foods.  And if I’m not careful, I can eat half a box in one sitting, much like Jethro Bodine.  Check out his cereal bowl (he comes in after a minute)…

So, for my Thursday Thirteen, I’m going to list 13 of my all-time favorite cereals…

1.  Lucky Charms.  Pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, and green clovers—who can resist the marshmallow-y goodness?  They’re magically delicious, y’all!

Lucky Charms

2.  Trix.  Silly rabbit, Trix are for Lulu.  Only Lulu.  Lulu does not share.

Trix

3.  Froot Loops.  Toucan Sam has a nose that knows the fruitful delights of this cereal.

Froot Loops

4.  Apple Jacks.  A is for apple, J is for Jacks.  Cinnamon toasty Apple Jacks!

Apple Jacks

5.  Cap’n Crunch.  Never soggy.  Always crunchy!  Watch the caps…

Cap’n Crunch

6.  Cinnamon Toast Crunch.  Cinnamon and sugar all swirled together in a crunchy, toasty bite.  Mmm-mmm good.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch

7.  Cocoa Puffs.  Of course, Lulu is koo-koo for Cocoa Puffs!

Cocoa Puffs

8.  Cookie Crisp.  What could be better than chocolate chip cookies and milk for breakfast?  Duh!  It can’t get any more nutritious that that.  I want my Coooooooooooookie Crisp!

Cookie Crisp

9.  Corn Pops.  I would have to say, this is my most favorite cereal of all.  There’s nothing like a spoonful of cold milk and Corn Pops.  Gotta have my Pops!

 Corn Pops

10.  Reese’s Puffs.  You got chocolate in my peanut butter!  You got peanut butter on my chocolate!  Yeah, whatever.  Just give Lulu her Reese’s for breakfast.

Reese’s

11.  Fruity Pebbles.  To me, this is probably one of the sweetest cereals on the list.  But I love me some Barney Rubble, so it’s all good.  Yabba-dabba-do!

Fruity Pebbles

12.  Sugar Smacks (now called Honey Smacks).  Okay, seriously, I almost choked to death eating this cereal when I was 6 years old.  And I totally remember it.  Still, I dig’em!

Sugar Smacks

13.  Honeycomb.  When I was young (okay, maybe 15), I totally wanted to hang at the Honeycomb Hideout and sing:  “Honeycomb’s big…yeah yeah yeah! It’s not small…no no no! Honeycomb’s got…a big big bite! Big big taste in a big big bite!”  But I never got to…

Honeycombs

What is your favorite cereal?

Happy TT, y’all!

I can *feel* my teeth rotting, looking at all those boxes!

My favorites? Cinnamon Toast Crunch (when I could get my hands on it before the rest of my family). Lucky Charms (although my little brother had this habit of picking all the marshmallows out before I got there). And, plain old Cheerios. Dry or with milk. I could eat a box of those.

Happy TT!

Jeez, that sounds seriously toothache-inducing!
That cupboard looks quite impressive, though the only ones I would probably even try are #7 and #12. The other ones look somehow sinister to me with their too bright artificial colors. I bet the list of ingredients lists mainly sugar and lots of strange chemicals with unpronouncable names, right?
This list makes me want eat an apple or some other healthy thing right now. LOL

Oh, I love Cap’n Crunch. I can eat bowl after bowl…except then the roof of my mouth is so raw that I can’t eat anything else for days! I love Frosted Flakes, too. AND Frosted Cheerios. Pretty much anything frosted.

Lulu, I hate to be an ignoramoose, but what is a “DD”?

Im glad you put lucky charms first. That cereal is singlehandedly responsible for 14 of my freshman 15. And worth every bite. (my mom wouldn’t let us have it so I didn’t discover it until college. Then i went crazy)
Second favorite is the reeses puffs. One not on the list that i LOVE…Golden Grahams. Mmmmmm!!

Good list!!

That’s one great list. My faves are Frosted Flakes, Fruity Pebbles, and Peanut Butter Capn Crunch. And Cocoa Krispies. And when I’m feeling grown-up, Honey bunches of Oats (booooo, how boring, who let me in here?!)

I have to go eat breakfast now… :)

September 20th, 2007 at 9:23 am

Cap’n Crunch will hurt your mouth if you’re not careful with it. But it’s kinda worth it.

I don’t buy those kinds of cereal or my kids would eat the whole box in one day.

OK..we were actually born twins then separated at birth..such a shame they did that to us.

I am doing Weight Watchers…sugar cereal is OUT..but I’ve learned you can eat boring cereal w/ Organic Fat Free milk and slenda and it’s pretty darn good! BUT..that isn’t what this is about..
MY ALL TIME FAVORITES:

1. Alphabits
2. Life
3. Frosted Flakes
4. Fruit Loops
5. Sugar Smacks
6. Count Dracula and Frankenberry..NO BOOBERRY
7. Honeycomb
8. Raisin Bran w/ honey drizzeled on top
9. Rice Krispies w/ lots of sugar..OR Coco Krispies (don’t need sugar..I had a bowl for dinner last night)
10. It’s NOT cold cereal but I have to throw in instant oatmeal packets. Quaker Oats Maple and Brown Sugar is my fav. (Now I’m doing plain w/ cinnimon and splenda..still good)

I used to love Apple Jacks..then I ate them with a hangover when I was younger and projectile vomited them..all over my shower curtian.. I an’t eat them anymore.
TMI? Sorry… ;-)

Ahh, we share a favorite: Reese, yum!

I also really loved Blueberry Morning until they “improved” it, now it’s not so good. Damn people!! And I really enjoy Nature’s Valley (green box) Cinnamon something or other - it’s yummy with fruit.

Jay likes really boring cereal like Total and Crispix. I’m kinda surprised I married him!

Thanks for sharing your list!

ummm… i never did like cereal but i do remember going to nannys house in florida and she always had a box of sugar smacks. and i ate them then. but didnt really like them, i dont like pouring milk in cereal it freaks me out. but sarah loves all that stuff, i used to catch her in her room when she was a little girl with a box of lucky charms hiding in her closet eating all the marshmellows.

September 20th, 2007 at 2:40 pm

I would have to say Fruity Pebbles, i used to love to wait until the milk turned colors! I can remeber growing up when brother Todd would, no lie eat 2 “butter tubs” of cereal; 3 times a day. I can only imagine my parents cereal & milk bill when he was between the ages of 10-19!

Dry cereal is good too!

Chuckles, I cannot believe you never did like cereal! You have been missing out for 22 years on the good stuff. LOL!

Hi LuLu —-
As I can clearly remember at your Mom’s house (you know your Mom is my “favorite sister”) not only was her cabinet filled with “cereal’, but also filled with tons & tons of candy.
I even liked to look in her pantry to find aout 10 kind of candy bars & about 5-7 packs of cookies. It’s a wonder you don’t weigh 250 lbs.
Miss Margarita is true about “Todd” and his cereal & milk.

I was going to say the same thing diz said for my first sentence. At least I know there will always be plenty of granola and wheat bran if you visit. ;)

Though I do like my Apple Cinnamon Cheerios sometimes.

There’s a blurred line where cereal becomes candy. So many cereals are just little lumps of coloured sugar. My faves are Shreddies and a brand I used to find only rarely (in England) called Fru Grains. I thought they had discontinued it till one day I saw it in a health food store. That was amost enough to put me off it!

Cheerios was a staple around my house when my kids were growing up, along with rice krispies, corn flakes, oatmeal, and cream of wheat. But, every one of those boxes has been in my daughter’s food closet and more! Cereal is like pop tarts - when they come out with something new, especially any thing in the chocolate flavor, they have to try it. :)

September 20th, 2007 at 7:15 pm

Gee, when I was a kid we had Malt-o-Meal, Cream of Wheat, and instant oatmeal. Then, for twenty years my favorite cereal was Bran Flakes (really!), sometimes with walnuts and raisins.

When my kids were little, I carried on the tradition with hot cereal, interspersed with Bran Flakes and Toasty O’s. Then one year we overloaded on oatmeal. We needed a new toaster, and we wanted a NICE one, not a disposable Walmart one, and it cost $70. So we decided that if we ate only oatmeal, instead of Toasty O’s, or two solid months for breakfast, we would have saved that much. Now nobody will touch oatmeal, or any hot cereal with a ten-foot pole. (Sorry kids!)

So now what do we eat? My new favorites: Honey Nut Shredded Wheat. Oatmeal Squares. Life. Golden Grahams.

Ok, this is torture! Cereal is wonderful! When I was a kid, my mother mostly let us have only Wheaties, Cheerios and oatmeal - with brown sugar - not white! Which made those moments with Fruit Loops into a small piece of heaven. (We also ate wheat bread - which is gross when made into French toast… I hate wheat bread now)

You have some great cereals listed - Cap’n Crunch - in every flavor - all fantastic, Fruit Loops, Trix, Apple Jacks - I ate all these in large amounts when I got my own place! I threw up on Corn Pops once when I was little and still can’t handle the idea of eating them. Today, I would have to add Golden Grahams, Frosted Mini Wheats, Coco Wheats, and granola to the list. (My husband uses granola as an ice cream topping - it’s actually not bad.) Ooooo I used to love picking out the little marshmallows in Count Chocula (sp?) to eat dry. I can actually remember which friend’s mother bought which kind of yummy cereal - we were terribly deprived at my house…

Remember when butter “bowls” were recycled into actual everyday dishes? Those ones that were shaped like a cone they put on your dog’s head?

I love how you ended the traditional Irish lilt with y’all… I’ve practiced that a couple times and just can’t do “y’all” in an Irish accent… LOL

September 21st, 2007 at 1:07 pm

Wow! I’m impressed over that many cereals!!!!! *whistles*

Here in Sweden we don’t have that many, the only one of those I recognize is the fruit loops. We seem to have other variants, with honey, chocolate, but mostly plain ones. Sweden is a very health-conscious country you now ;-)

My own favorite is plain old Kellogs Cornflakes, to be healty, but with a little strawberry jam added to be sinful *giggles*

Oh, I do love your blog layout very, very much! Leanne really is the blogdesign goddess and your template is done extremely well into every detail!!! Love the humor in it!!!!

I can hardly wait ’til she has done mine too….
