Okay - so this post is a bit later than “afternoon,” but I’ve been busy with my real job. Gah…
Y’all, I think that I’m the biggest pack rat impulse shopper that ever did exist. I have a really bad habit of buying something on a whim because I think it’s odd, or cute, and that I’ll somehow find a place for it in, around, or outside my home. And these items generally end up in the basement or piled high on a shelf in the top of a closet, because I get them home and wonder what the hell I was thinking. Case in point:
Shut up. I was working a booth at a Fall festival on Saturday for the Humane Society, and I saw this soup-can art out of the corner of my eye. It was odd. It was cute. I thought that I could somehow find a place for it in, around, or outside my home. Or maybe not.
And it gets worse…
On Saturday after the festival, GR and I stopped at a local gas station close to our house. It’s one of those gas stations that was built in 1950-something and they operate two gas pumps, but the gas is approximately $5.25/gallon, so no one ever buys it there unless there’s a dire emergency or a blitzkrieg or something. And the old man who owns the place still sells stuff like hoop cheese, fried pies, vegetables from his garden, and BBQ made in a crockpot from the back of the store. Did I mention that I live in the country? Anyhow, GR goes in to buy something (okay, cigarettes), and just lookie at what he comes out with:
Um, yeah. It’s a gourd. GR is proud of his purchase. Tomorrow, I’ll be digging a spot in the backyard right beside the tin man…
And after our grand shopping adventure, GR and I were off to help our SIL, Big H, celebrate her 28th birthday. And it all started out with a sweet and innocent dinner at Taco Mac…
And ended up here at Wild Bill’s…
..with Big H and Lala (not Lulu) riding the mechanically-challenged bull…
…and sipping Amaretto Sours…
And because I’ve got a good 9 years on these 28-year-old munchkins, I was tapping my heels together around 11:30pm, and saying, “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home…”. So, I grabbed Toto, er GR, threw him in my basket, and off we flew. But what a wickedly fun time we had…

NOT from the country: WTF? hoop cheese??
That is NOT gray, that is your scalp! Color still looks good, was that a permanent wash or one that fades? I’m thinking of going a little “darker” for winter..still scared of the red..although I LOVE it.
GR’s purchase is FAB!! I do love the Tin Man also..Just put him out front and do the whole house as a Wizard of Oz theme.. Bindi an be ToTo..you can wear some red shoes..now you just need a flying monkey!
MP – it is grey!! It was a permanent wash, but for some reason, it fades quickly on my hair. I have an appointment next week to get a retouch, but I’m NOT doing the red again…
GR can be my flying monkey.
Wikipedia describes hoop cheese better than I can…
Hoop Cheese is a firm, dry cottage cheese, similar to farmer’s cheese in that most of the liquid has been pressed out. It is different from farmer’s cheese in that farmer’s cheese is made with milk, cream and salt, while hoop cheese is made from milk alone.
Hoop cheese is difficult to find commercially in the United States, due to the difficulty of automating the manufacturing process. It was once so popular, however, that a device called a hoop cheese cutter was manufactured and used in general stores during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This object resembled a turntable with a knife blade suspended above it. It was built by scale companies of the period to cut the exact amount of cheese the customer wanted.
A number of independently-owned restaurants in eastern North Carolina serve hoop cheese on biscuits, often accompanying a slice of pork tenderloin or fried chicken breast.
Ooh can I have the gourd? I bet my mother-in-law would LOVE it and I NEVER know what to get her!
HA! I once bought this really cute stuffed crow at a fall festival. It wasn’t a real crow stuffed, but a stuffed animal, just to clarify. But it was wearing the cutest calico overalls and a straw hat. Where is it now? NO idea. Probably in a box in the attic.
Oh dear…some nights really don’t need to be memorexed! Ha ha ha! Rah rah – can’t wait until Saturday! Goooooooo Cabbage Patch! Yea!!! (Yes, I did just do a cheerleader jump!)
Lololol, I actually did laugh out loud (WAY out loud) over GR’s purchase. So you’re sitting there in the car, waiting for him, and he comes out carrying that thing – did you go, “wtf?” It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen!
I do not see gray hair, at all. Your hair still looks adorable!
Jenny – what’s your address? I’ll send it FEDEX…
MQ – the crow would probably go well with both of my items. You must find it, and bring it tonight. We’ll bury them all in Sophie’s back yard!
Big H – oh the joy of having a blog to post incriminating photos against my family and friends…
I’m SOOOOO excited about Saturday! I think it’s supposed to be sunny…
Christie – I basically just sat in amazement. Hoop cheese I kind of expected, but not this…this…this thing. Actually, I think that I’ll make it my centerpiece at my Halloween “extravaganza.” It’s kind of frightening, right?
Oh, the hair. Well, thanks for the compliment, but I do totally have a silver streak right down the middle of my head. I go on Tuesday for new color. New color meaning brown with highlights, not red with highlights. And no skunk streak…
Sounds like a fun night!
