Thirteen Misadventures of the Apple Dumpling Gang

The Apple Dumpling Gang

This past Saturday, Phoo, Big H, and I made off with a surly GR unto them thar hills of the North Georgia Mountains on a quest for apple fritters, pig racing, BBQ, and babies being birthed in a cabbage patch.  Where else other than the South can you combine all of that down-home fun into one day trip?  Oh, not many places, I’m quite sure of that.

So, in honor of our little adventure, I thought that I would chronicle our fun and good times in the form of a Thursday Thirteen.  But wait!  Before I forget, I can officially count off one more item (see #10) on my list of 13-things-that-I-must-do-before-the-end-of-the-year-but-will-never-actually-get-around-to-doing-all-of them-for-the-love-of-God.  So, after this trip, that leaves me with 10 more adventures.  And I plan to take care of three more of them over the next few days while my mother is in town from Florida.

And yee-haw, here’s our journey to good times, y’all…

1.  Our day started at the beautiful Hillcrest Orchards in Ellijay.

Hillcrest Orchards

2.  There we bought bushels of apples and jelly and mingled with the local wildlife.

3.  And we also played on this fun little slide and rode some 4-wheel thingie-ma-bobs (what do you call those things?):

Lulu on slide

4.  And we sang gospel with these, um, nice people.  And possibly Jesus.

The Choir

5.  And we placed bets on watched these cute little piglets run around a track, while we yelled, “Soo-eee! Piggy! Piggy! Piggy!”

Pig race

6.  And oddly enough after watching the races, we worked up a mighty big craving for pig meat.  So, we made the short drive to Poole’s Bar-B-Q, which is quite possibly the most awesome BBQ joint in the entire world, y’all!  Nine out of ten pigs agree!

Poole’s BBQ

…and there’s this awesome Pig Hill of Fame behind the restaurant:

the Pig Hall of Fame

7.  And after we filled our bellies with the sweet love of BBQ and the World’s Largest Fried Apple Fritter (oink! oink!)…

Apple Fritter

8.  …we took a ride around Amicolola Falls.  And when I say “ride,” I mean we didn’t even get out of the car to climb to the top of the falls.  Hell, we didn’t even see the falls.  We basically just drove to the top of the mountain while GR freaked over the fact that the car “might” be overheating, when in fact it might not be overheating.  But possibly so.  Here’s the car overheating.  Maybe.  We’re really not sure…

Overheated car?

9.  And after we stood around and stared at the engine for a while, we decided to leave Amicalola and make our way to Babyland General.  Which is approximately 15 hours away by foot.  Which is exactly how we were going to be traveling if and when the car decided to overheat in the midst of Gold Rush Days traffic in Dahlonega.  See the traffic?  Do these people not understand that this is not an actual “gold rush?”

Bad traffic

10.  And eventually we arrived at our final destination.  The place that GR has been waiting to visit for all of his natural born life—BabyLand General Hospital:

11.  Can you see the excitement on his face?

Proud Papa

12.  Actually, the hospital is really sweet and adorable.  And I think that Britney’s kids have been placed here…

Brit’s kids

13.  But poor Britney.  She can’t even come here to visit them.  She isn’t allowed for all of the obvious reasons as stated in the following hospital regulations…

No Britney’s allowed

Oh, well.  Brit will be happy to know that just a few miles down the road, she can wash away her tears with one of these…

Oh my gosh, I’m laughing my head off! Love the picture of the car “overheating!” GR really thought we were going to breakdown in the Gold Rush or something! What a good time! Too bad we didn’t get pictures of those autographed banjos being sold with the boiled peanuts! Ha ha!

Questions: What is going on w/ that Pig Hill of fame, it looks like a quilt?

I’ve only driven through Georgia..or been to the airport. It’s real purty!!

Why do you ALWAYS have to post about REALLY good food. Pork and Fried Apple thingies…MAN that looks good.

Chicken on a stick..I keep seeing that. Isn’t that like a kabob?

Can you imagine not being within driving distance to a pumkin/apple orachard/farm w/ pig races??

You have the best adventures…and photos. I must come down to get me some chicken on a stick. That’s what I call the straightforward marketing approach.

I’m with Leandra (who was braver than me to ask)…what the heck is the pig hill of fame? Do we really want to know??

And more importantly, did something happen in GR’s childhood that made him WANT to go cuddle with cabbage patch dolls?

I can’t think of anything more you could have squeezed in there..what a big day! Ive been to Amocolola falls a couple of times…once I was even dumb enough to climb the 3 majillion stairs to the top. With my car parked at the bottom…and let me just tell you going down is JUST as hard as coming up!

I missed the whole apple thing this year…and have just remembered the amazing apple cider doughnuts they have…did you see any of those? IM DYING FOR ONE!

Leandra - I’m not exactly sure what Chicken on a Stick is since I didn’t actually see it. It really kind of scares me though…

MP - do you think it’s taken me long enough to get back to you on this?

What is going on w/ that Pig Hill of fame, it looks like a quilt? The hill is made up of a bunch of wooden pigs with people’s names on them. I guess you can buy one from the BBQ joint and place it on the hill. Looks pretty covered to me, though.

I’ve only driven through Georgia..or been to the airport. It’s real purty!! Well, certain parts are purty. The Atlanta airport is definitely not one of those parts.

Why do you ALWAYS have to post about REALLY good food. Pork and Fried Apple thingies…MAN that looks good. Because all that I do is eat. I am a food machine.

Chicken on a stick..I keep seeing that. Isn’t that like a kabob? Maybe? I’m not quite sure. I’m just glad that they don’t call it Chick on a Stick.

Can you imagine not being within driving distance to a pumkin/apple orachard/farm w/ pig races?? Up until this year, I’ve never been to a pig race in my LIFE. This Fall, I’ve been to two. I am now officially cultured.

And regarding the movie, I know that I’ve watched it before, but I just can’t quite remember it.

Esme - I didn’t actually SEE the chicken on a stick, but so I just can’t tell you about it. I’m just wondering what the point of it is?

J. Lynne - it’s a sad thing that “chicken on a stick” defines the South.

Sorry it’s taken so long to get back with you! It’s been a crazy weekend! I’ll be over to visit you soon!

Susan -

The pig hill of fame is just a big hill filled with wooden pigs that customers have purchased, written their names on, and placed on the hill. It looks pretty full to me.

And more importantly, did something happen in GR’s childhood that made him WANT to go cuddle with cabbage patch dolls? GR did not exactly WANT to go cuddle with the dolls. He was sort of coerced and bribed…

Lauren - there were apple cider donuts! I had a sample, but didn’t buy any. They were awesome, though! I should have a certain pregnant lady some…
