UPDATE: If you’re intersted in partipating in Mystery Theater Thursday, click the nifty little badge on my right sidebar to read about it!
I was searching my attic this evening for an item that I’m planning to write about in a post, and I came across these sweet little treasures from my childhood:
Okay, they’re not really Spice Girl dolls, because
a.) Sporty Spice, the coolest one of all, is missing.
b.) Scary Spice does not have blond hair or blue eyes, nor have I ever seen her wearing a vest.
c.) Posh would not be caught dead in that pink and white, eyelet get-up…mainly because it would cover her orbs.
d.) Were those girls even born in 1975?
Anyhow, I don’t have many keepsakes from my early years, but somehow I have managed to hold on to these little dolls even though I’ve moved 15 times in my life. And printed on the tag of each doll is the year, 1975—the year in which little Lulu turned five and came into owning this rowdy bunch of dolls. And while the made-in year is disclosed on the tag, the brand name of the dolls is not.
So, if anyone knows the name of these dolls or happened to own the same set, would you please leave me a comment and let me know?
Each doll is around 5″ to 6″ in size, and they all have soft bodies with Velcro hands. I’m guessing that the Velcro was used so that they could all hold hands and sing, “Slam it to the left if you’re havin’ a good time, shake it to the right if ya know that you feel fine…“. I believe that there also used to be a white dog with black ears that was part of this group.
Hmm…a mystery, no?
BTW - I’m thinking of making this Mystery Theater Thursday a regular on my blog. I seem to have some mysterious items around my house that could make for some interesting blog fodder. And I’m not talking about GR, people. That would entail Mystery Theater every day of the week.
So, if you’d like to join in with your own Mystery Theater Thursday, feel free. I might even come up with a nifty little icon for the event. Just give me a couple of years days…
Update…case solved! No less than an hour after I posted this, the brilliant AlphaDogMa (aka Jessica Fletcher) has solved the mysery. These dolls are part of Mattel’s Honey Hill Bunch, and I think that I found Scary Spice:

Are we allowed more clues?
Can you tell us what is on the back of every doll’s head just below the hairline? There should be something embossed in the rubber which lists the manufacturer and the copyright date.
I loves a good mystery. Its all those years spent watching Angela Landsbury!

Damn Alpha, you have been watching a lot of Angela Landsbury!
The back of the hairline is embossed with the date-1975-and the manufacturer is Mattel. One step closer…and the mystery is slowly unraveling.
Congrats you are the proud owner of Mattel’s Honey Hill Bunch.

That is 24 minutes of my life well spent!

Just another reason why I love you. And I just knew that there was a little white dog…with brown ears, not black.
I can put all of my unresolved childhood issues to rest now. Thank you, Dr. Fletcher.
I couldn’t think at all because I was still stuck on the Spice Girls! Thank goodness you found Scary. I was worried that she might have ended up on some show like “Dancing With The Stars”…oh…wait…

Lulu – those are so cute! I’m reflecting back on my childhood friends…many of which were created by the Claire out of my dad’s socks!
I HAD THOSE DOLLS TOO (also 5 in ‘75!). I also had one more. A brunette with a blue fabric (similar to the green fabric on the red head). I called her Jenny, but do not know if that was her “real name”. She had little freckles across her nose. That is so cool. I wish I could find mine! Ok, I am going to mommas to look in the basement….uh, if you dont hear back from me in a day or so……tell someone to come looking! (scary….)

Correction! Theose were little tiny dolls. I think I know where they are…in the barbie box. I am still gonna find that Jenny doll. She also had a sister, I called Mary a blond….ok, now I am on a hunt. still, if I am not back……basement is scary. LOL

Tootsie – I totally watched her on DWTS. But only because Maxim Chmerkovskiy was her dance partner.
Big H – oooh! Smelly.
Leigh – I will send in the swat team if you don’t return from momma’s soon. Please post about your findings.
Lauren – I’ll remind you.
BadKelly – The fact that I was alive in 1975 gives me nightmares.
Lol, I love all the reasons why these girls can’t be the Spice Girls. Nor have I ever seen her wearing a vest cracked me up!
Hey, thanks for the March for Babies donation! I really appreciate it, and every single donation helps! And uh, I see you’re still not LJ-ing…
Christie’s last blog post..Will you please help?
I think this is your best post ever. I had a couple of those dolls too. How do yours still have all their hair? And how is it still laying flat against their heads?
Christie – oh, whoa is me. The LJ thing. I know, I know.
All Adither – I’ve kept them cryogenically frozen for years now. Actually, Baby Spice’s hair is a bit wild and untamable. And somehow, the blond Scary Spice has a very modern, bobbed style. Although, I’m tempted to wield my scissors and stack it in the back.
What fun! I can’t believe you got an answer to this mystery!
I throw everything away that I don’t use, don’t need, and can’t remember what it’s for, so I can’t really participate. However, Grant and I are scheduled to clean out my mom’s garage this weekend. She doesn’t throw ANYTHING way — and I mean for the last 35 years. Who knows what I’ll find.
