You can all breathe a sigh of relief. This is the final edition of Lulu’s Favorite Things about Germany.
FAVORITE MODE OF TRANSPORTATION
If you read my postabout the horrific landing that we had at the Munich airport, then you must know that a Delta 767 is not my most favorite mode of transportation. In fact, I’m scared to death to fly…but that’s a whole other story. While in Germany, we traveled by many means of transportation.
We traveled by Munich’s fabulous S-Bahn (btw, Atlanta? You need to get a freaking clue):
By bike around the city of Munich:
By Opel Astra around Germany and Austria:
By a mining train into the Berchtesgaden’s salt mines (Check out the second family from the left. They need to learn to contain their excitement):
By electric boat on Lake Königssee:
By motorcoach on The Sound of Music tour:
By horse and carriage up to Neuschwanstein Castle:
And finally, my favorite (and second scariest), by cable car—5900 feet—to the top of Mount Jenner:
The tranquil Lake Obersee:
An angel on high in the Franziskanerkirche in Salzburg:
The Abbey of Ettal in South Bavaria:
A grave marker at the Pfarrkirche St. Peter und Paul in Oberammergau:
Looking down on the village of Hohenschwangau and Hohenschwangau Castle:
Looking out a window of Neuschwanstein Castle:
And finally, looking down on the square in the medieval town of Rothenburg:
OVERALL IMPRESSION OF GERMANY (BAVARIA)
First and foremost, I can honestly say that I’ve never been to a county where people take so much pride in cleanliness. In Munich and in Rothenburg, we witnessed shop owners scrubbing the cobblestone in front of their stores with soap and water. Every public bathroom that I walked into seemed bleached clean (even at gas stations!). Our hotel rooms were spotless and seemingly sterile. I saw regular citizens stopping to pick up the smallest piece of trash on the street. Recycling seems to be a way of life for everyone.
Another thing that I noticed is that German dogs are freakishly obedient. Freakishly. Many dogs walk along through the city streets with their owners OFF leashes. They don’t bark at other dogs. They don’t bother people. They sit quietly under café tables waiting for their owners. And that is why I have decided to ship Bindi off to a German doggie boot camp. I’m hoping that she’ll return home freakishly obedient and able to clean my bathrooms. I can only dream.

Yes, your Lake Obersee photo is fantastic.
Every public bathroom that I walked into seemed bleached clean (even at gas stations!).
The Germans. They are my kind of people. Well, except for the neo-Nazis. But let us not dwell on a few bad apples.
Did the dogs on the subway seem odd? I can’t imagine my dog sitting in a subway car without living a puddle behind.
Now when do we get to see a photo array of your souvenir purchases?
That was such an awesome trip Lulu – I’m so happy for you! I’ve definitely got Germany on my fantasy travel list now! I’m serious, I think I’d love to live there! P.S. Can Kaya go to German doggie bootcamp too?!
What awesome, beautiful shots! I don’t know what I enjoyed more…. the pictures or the commentary.

Kelly’s last blog post..100 Newish Things About Me
Ok…I had many comments to make as I read through your post, but I’m old and they’ve all left my mind. The picture with the angel in the sunlight…fantastic! All the rest are beautiful, too, but that one just stood out.
The cable car – OH HELL NO!
You’re a better woman than me/I (I cannot recall grammar either), is all I can say.
I wonder why the German doggies are so well-behaved. Hmmm…did you make sure they weren’t slipping tranqs into their food or something??
And last comment – did you have to sing the songs on the Sound of Music tour???? LOL

Dear Lulu,
Those are some beautiful pictures of Germany , the scenery is breath-taking. You have many wonderful memories to cherish. Germany is truly a beautiful place that God created, all the spectacular mountains and lakes.
When you get ready to go again, take me with you again (as your travel companion).
P.S…. I saw on the travel channel another fascinating place to travel would be to Turkey. I’ll have to tell you all about it at Thanksgiving. Do some research and lets go next year (seriously) LOVE AND HUGS TO YOU
Dear Lulu,
I too want to send Tippy along with Bindi. Just like us they could get to know each other as great travel companions. By the way you forgot to mention the other reason you loved the Maria Gern hotel for the friendly tennent we had as a lovely roomie at times. Ha ha EEE EEEEEK Lada lada EEEK. You are the best travel buddie I have ever been with thanks for all the excitement I had a blast!!!!! I know it would have been more fun with your dog Oops I mean Husband however I am eternally greatful for the wonderful memories you have left me with.
I love the commentary you always get me laughing
T-nut
SubSpace…you’ve read my mind. I’ll be doing a Thursday Thirteen tomorrow about my chachkis from Germany!
And regarding dogs in the subway…that didn’t seem too odd. Now, dogs in restaurants? That was a bit odd.
Kelly – no way!! Your mother is so funny! I’m so glad to make the connection now!
Angie – I do not sing in public. Or private for that matter. However, my friend T-Nut could totally be a professional singer, and she sang the entire trip…and not just on The Sound of Music tour. She even sang when we were driving down the Autobahn.
Aunt Patty Cake – first of all Turkey and Thanksgiving so go together! And secondly, Turkey is totally on the top of my list of places that I want to go!
However, next year is kind of GRs pick as to where we will go on vacation. That means I’ll end up on the coast of Mississippi or something.
T-Nut…I totally miss our little German friend at Maria Gern. I’m guessing that she’s stalking someone else by now.
I truly enjoy your posts about your trip. I would love to hear and read more about your trip. Looks like it’s such a great trip!!! Love all the commentary. You are the funniest!
Amy @ The Q Family’s last blog post..Wordless Wednesday: Help! I’m stuck!
Your trip looks like it was so much fun! I found the dogs in France and Spain freakishly obedient too.
Maybe Macie should go to EU boot camp.
