No Account Mule, Kickin’ on a Tin Can

Oh, please tell me that I’m not the only one who knows where the title of this post comes from.  When I started this Thursday Thirteen, the words came to my mind in a flash.  I’m not sure what that says about me, other than I’m old-ish, perhaps a little square, or maybe just bit nostalgic.  Or could be because I have a husband who is a big fan of the show that featured this song in an episode.  As a result, this and other choice songs have been relentlessly pounded into my head for 15 straight years with no sign of stopping.  The agony.

Let’s move on.  As some of you might know, I have a mild obsession with junk collectibles.  And if you’re so inclined, you can read about some of my collections here, here, and here.  If you’re so inclined.  And if you have a spare bottle of wine to wash it all down with.

So in keeping with tradition, I’ve delegated today’s Thursday Thirteen to showcase my vintage tin can collection that perches on top of my kitchen cabinets.  Maybe showcase is too strong of a word.  It’s far from a Ming Dynasty vase collection.  Hell, it’s far from a dimestore vase collection.  These are tin cans, people!  Am I yelling?  I don’t mean to yell.

Without further ado, here is my showcase.  Of tin.

1.  I believe that chips in a large can were (maybe are?) a northern U.S. kind of thing.  Someone please fill Lulu in.

2.  I’ve never heard of this brand–Homfresh.  I tried doing a Google search, but no luck.  Anyone ever heard of these chips?  The tin is pretty old.

3.  More chips in a can.  Not familiar with this brand either…

4.  This Red Star baking powder can started my entire collection.  I’m assuming this is restaurant size, because I’ve used the same, tiny red can of baking powder for years now and have hardly made a dent.  That reminds me, does baking powder expire?  Ew.

5.  I can eat an entire mountain of Cracker Jacks.  No, really!

6.  I seriously love the fact that you could once buy marshmallows in a can.

7.  Wheat Thins, kind of like a cracker, but more like a snack…

8.  Along with Ginger Ale, the savior of all hang-overs, morning sickness, and the stomach flu…

9.  I love to eat Ritz crackers slathered with cream cheese and jelly.  On a daily basis.

10.  Milk-Bone® is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year…

11.  Mmm…candies.

12.  This tin is not vintage, but the colors really matched my kitchen.

13.  This one is not a tin, but it sits on top of my cabinets alongside the others.  This was my grandmother’s sifter…

There you have it.  Lulu’s Showcase of Tins.

IMPORTANT SUCKY NOTE:  After I labored over and wrote this post, I found out that the Thursday Thirteen meme no longer exists.  Serves me right for staying out of the blogging loop for so long…

My mother-in-law also has an impressive tin collection, and I still have a few she gave me years ago. She stores all sorts of things in hers, but for myself I found that I have a hard time keeping track of what’s in them unless its exactly what’s on the label. Out of sight, out of mind with me, and if it’s mislabeled, so much the worse.

Oh, by the way, there is a new Thursday Thirteen hub. Go here.

I am soooo glad your back! Thanks for commeting on my blog. I left a comment to yours over there so be sure to read it (burlap post). I have missed that wit!
Anyway-the song-girl, I watch it every night…..the Andy Griffith Show. It was from the episode Gomer the House guest. It’s the one where Wally fires Gomer for talking too much and working to little, and since Gomer lives in the back of the gas station, the firing is also an eviction.

“No account mule, Kickin’ on a tin can, kickin’ on a tin can, kickin’ on a tin can. No account mule, Kickin’ on a tin can, all day long. A no account mule, Sittin’ on a mountain, Sittin’ on a mountain, Sittin’ on a mountain, No account mule, Sittin’ on a mountain, all day long. OH! No account mule, Eatin’ on a haystack, Eatin’ on a haystack, Eatin’ on a haystack, No account mule, Eatin’ on a haystack, all day long.”

So? Do I win a prize? A Lulu t shirt? A pack of beer (I dont drink beer…not my drink of choice)?

Anyway…I love the tins! I collected for awhile. Now they are stored in my basement. I have a gold and brown Charles Chip tin like yours. My great grandmother always bought those chips. She lived in Alabama and couldnt drive, so I am sure that it wasnt just a northern thing. My mom still talks about those chips. How fresh and crisp.

Glad you are back Lulu!

Glad you’re back! :)

Who cares if the Thursday Thirteen is ka-plooey! You can still do it!

I also collect tins. I have them on top of the cabinets in my kitchen. Some of mine are really old, and some are new and just look old! It’s just one more thing we have in common!

Btw, how you doin’ with Gus being away at school? My time is drawing near. Less than 4 months until graduation, and then summer, and then off to college. Will I live through it?

Welcome back! The only thing I collect on a regular basis is dust and I think we all know what dust looks like.

I wish marshmallows still came in a tin. Then they wouldn’t get all squashed when my husband tries to shove all a week’s worth of groceries onto one tiny shelf.

Christie – seriously? I talk to Gus at least 3 times a day. I drive the poor boy nuts, I know, but this mama has to keep up with her son no matter how old he is!!

Angie – I was so very careful to not capture in my pictures the dust that lines the top of kitchen cabinets. I’m surprised that I’m still breathing.

Dear LuLu,

Enjoyed your “Showcase of Tins” collection…. Remember when I used to collect tins, and did I give you the pretty Candy tin? I know that I have given you one.
Again, glad you’re back, and tell Gus hello for me.
LOVE AND HUGS
P.S. A LuLu t-shirt would be cute.

Nice collection. Reminded me that I’ve not had Ritz crackers since I was a kid; have to seek them out again sometime.

I had a similar Thursday Thirteen disappointment.

I also have a collection of tins. Mine aren’t as coordinated. A lot of them seem to be alcohol-oriented, which is because one of my best friends used to be the supervisor for the wine department of a grocery store and they never put the tins on the shelves. The weird thing is that she didn’t drink for personal reasons and I can’t drink for medical reasons, but for some reason with the tins and of course the boxes whenever we moved, we looked like the biggest alcoholics ever.

You had me at cream cheese. Although that statement, from me, would have come for the Wheat Thins can. I LOVE me some Wheat Thins with a smear of cream cheese. YUM.

And that marshmallow tin is awesome. I might have to find one of those!
